Here in Portland, Oregon, the Slow Food Movement has been gaining traction in recent years. We like to think of our working philosophy at Kensington Apothecary as the Slow Beauty Movement. We think Amazon's 2-day prime shipping has built unsustainable consumer expectations which are destructive not only for us as consumers seeking near-instant gratification, but for our bank accounts, our communities and for the planet as a whole.
Part of our philosophy of running a business is making work life interesting and varied for everyone who works for us. We have designed our workflow to allow for everyone in our small company to participate in and contribute to every aspect of our business. We generally assemble orders and do all ingredients ordering on Mondays, make new batches of products as needed on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and ship on Fridays. Wednesdays we reserve for any unexpected work demands. We don't believe it is healthy for a person to do the same job, day in and day out, for weeks and months and years on end. So we mix it up. As independent manufacturers, we feel very fortunate to have the luxury of designing our routine that way.
As a customer of ours, you have the luxury of knowing that your products are made fresh for you, which means we don't need to load our products with pounds of preservatives and extra chemicals meant to extend shelf life for years and years.
We invite you to take a deep breath with us, and let life happen at a more natural pace. Thank you for supporting us in this great experiment in work/life balance.
